Vermillion freshmen win thriller By Jim Prosser The Vermillion freshmen Tanagers defeated the Gayville-Volin JV Raider-ettes 29-27 in an overtime thriller in girls� basketball Feb. 7 at Gayville.
The score was tied 27-27 after regulation.
Rachel Odens scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Brittany Bye showed outstanding hustle and scored six points. Margaret Mueller contributed with seven steals.
�We worked hard and pulled off the win in overtime,� said VHS freshmen Coach Leah Bakke.
The teams were deadlocked 7-7 at the end of the first period, the Tanagers went into the locker room up 12-11 at halftime, and then trailed 21-19 going into the final period.
The VHS freshmen improved their record to 5-2, while the Gayville-Volin dropped to 4-9.
VHS sank 0 of 2 three-point attempts and made 9 of 13 free throw attempts. The Tanagers hit 10 of 35 field goal attempts, while Gayville-Volin was 11 of 38 from the field. Gayville-Volin sank 1 of 4 three-point tries and hit 4 of 4 free throw attempts.
