Vermillion JV makes it three wins in a row By Jim Prosser The Vermillion girls� junior varsity Tanagers topped the Canton C-Hawks 42-36 in girls basketball Feb. 5 at Vermillion.
This was the Tanager JV team�s third win in a row. Vermillion JV improved its record to 4-6, while Canton dropped to 8-5.
Brittni Stewart had the game of a lifetime. She battled with a 6-foot 5-inch woman the entire night and came away with a victory, including nine rebounds and 11 points.
The Tanagers led 14-10 after the first quarter, the game was knotted 17-17 after the second quarter, and the Tanagers led 31-22 going into the final period.
�We had a much improved defensive effort,� said Vermillion JV coach Lenni Billberg. �We battled through adversity for 28 minutes and walked away with a win.�
Vermillion JV hit 2 of 5 three-point attempts and hit 10 of 17 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 15 of 37 field goals, while Canton was 12 of 40 from the field. Canton connected on 3 of 7 three-point attempts and sank 9 of 15 free throw attempts.
The winners needed good efforts from several performers.
�Alicia Brown scored 11 points, grabbed five boards and made three steals,� coach Billberg said. �Anna Isaacson poured in six points and pulled down six boards. Kristina Blythe, after spraining her ankle in the freshman game, entered the JV game and provided valuable minutes.�
