Vermillion seventh graders capture Tri-State YMCA Basketball Championship Vermillion's seventh-grade girls' basketball team won the championship at the Tri-State YMCA Girls' Basketball Tournament held Jan. 24 and 25 in Sioux Falls.
"It was an exciting tournament with a lot of excellent teams," said coach Scott Munger. "The girls played outstanding team basketball and displayed a high level of sportsmanship during the tournament. They really represented Vermillion well."
The individual game results are as follows:
Vermillion � 33, Stanley County � 24
Vermillion defeated Stanley County by seven in their opening round game behind 10 points each from Ashley Ouellette and Jenny Bye. Sarah Day followed with nine points and Hannah and Sophie Nehlich-Arobba each had two points.
Bye and Ouellette led the rebounding with nine and eight respectively. Day and Lacey Leichtnam each grabbed five. Defensively Kristen Schwasinger had three steals.
Vermillion � 27, Sioux Falls Shock � 25
Vermillion advanced to the finals after a thrilling two-point victory over the Sioux Falls Schock. Sarah Day and Ashley Ouellette led the scoring with 11 and eight points. Hannah and Sophie Nehlich-Arobba, Jenny Bye and Kristen Schwasinger each scored two points.
Day and Bye grabbed seven and six rebounds respectively. Schwasinger and Kayla Munger played excellent all-around games. The two combined for six rebounds, four steals and five assists.
Vermillion � 28, Sioux Falls Wildcats � 23
Vermillion held on for a five-point victory in an intense championship game that featured several lead changes and full-court pressure from both teams.
Sarah Day and Ashley Ouellette continued their outstanding post play by scoring nine and eight points to lead the offense, Jenny Bye followed with five, Sophie Nehlich-Arobba had four and Kayla Munger added a basket.
Bye was the leading rebounder with nine.
