West Central overwhelms VHS Vermillion's Jackie Thomas faces a wall of West Central defenders as she gets an offensive play started under the hoop Jan. 27. By Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers were shot down by the West Central Trojans 73-43 in girls basketball Jan. 27 at Vermillion.
There is a very good reason why West Central is one of the best teams in the state, said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. We ran into a good team that is playing very well, and we just didnt have enough answers for them. Although the score doesnt show it, we did do some things pretty well. But when we had a short lapse in the second quarter, they jumped all over us and really took advantage. There were just too many offensive rebounds that we gave up during that span that really dug us a hole that we couldnt recover from.
The Tanagers trailed 14-13 after the opening period, trailed 41-21 after the second period, and then trailed 60-32 after the third period.
The loss dropped Vermillion to a record of 6-6, while WCHS improved to 8-1.
Vermillion made 7 of 15 three-pointers and hit 8 of 10 free throw attempts. The Tanagers sank 14 of 35 field goal attempts, while WCHS was 30 of 59 from the field. WCHS made 5 of 15 three-point tries and connected on 8 of 12 free throw attempts.
Vermillion was outrebounded 30-17.
Although defeated, the Tanagers had some individual bright spots.
Ellen Odson shot the ball extremely well tonight making three 3-pointers, coach Parish said. We are sitting in decent shape right now to get a top seed in the district so we will continue to play hard and keep trying to improve as the year moves on.
