Coyote softball goes perfect in DakotaDome Classic The South Dakota softball team improved to 11-8 on the season and finished the DakotaDome Classic with the only perfect record of the six teams entered, going 4-0 after posting an, 8-1, win over Morningside and an, 8-0, win over Wayne State (NE) on the final day of play in the DakotaDome.
In four games, the Coyotes surrendered just one run.
In the first game, Alisha Yowell pitched a complete game and improved her season record to 5-3, while scattering six hits, giving up one run and striking out eight. Yowell had her scoreless inning streak stopped at 13 1/3 as Morningside (14-6) mustered its only run in the top of the fourth inning.
USD, who garnered its eight runs off of eight hits, got two doubles from Krystal Kirwin, one in the fifth that scored Yowell.
Junior Sarah Wrage also had a pair of hits and scored two runs.
Angela Palma hit her third home run of the season, a three-run shot in the third inning that put the Coyotes up, 5-0.
Morningside, who left five runners on base, got two hits from Jackie Kinnetz.
Whitney McElrath took the loss for the Mustangs, giving up five runs in three innings of work. She struck out one and walked two.
Against the Wayne State Wildcats (4-9), Palma, who improved to 4-3 on the season, combined with Amber Terry to throw a three-hit shut out, the Coyotes third shut out in four games. Each pitcher struck out four.
USD scored its eight runs on five hits and took advantage of three Wildcat errors, while getting a double and base hit from Wrage.
The Coyotes got five runs in the second inning, tacked on two in the fifth and one in the sixth to end the game an inning early.
