Hubert had an impressive finish at the state tournament, said coach Casey OConnor. He wrestled very well with confidence from his feet and control from on top. We knew his semi-finals match against Havlik would be the deciding factor on getting into the finals.
Kyle stayed focused on his game plan and was able to put him on his back in the first period, he continued. Kyle continued to put the pressure on Havlik, who was unable to match Kyles offense.
Against Mike Engelhart in the finals, Hubert ended up losing 2-8, but he had a great tournament and will return next year as a senior for the Vermillion wrestling team, OConnor said.
As for the rest of the state qualifiers, I feel we were able to make our presence known, he continued. We were unable to place our other qualifiers, but five of them (Mart, Eidem, Heine, OConnor and Hawley) will be returning next year. I believe the experience of participating at this state tournament will motivate these qualifiers and teammates to work harder and set goals for placing at next years tournament.
Jordan Anderson, our lone senior state qualifier, fell just short of the placing round Friday night, OConnor added. Andersons leadership and dedication to the team will be sorely missed.
The coach also stressed how well the team handled the season.
I have seen great things from our team this year, he said. We are young, motivated, and willing to work hard towards achieving our goals. This work ethic will allow us to do great things with this team in the upcoming years.
