Tanagers clinch District 8A title By Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers topped the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 45-36 in girls� basketball Feb. 24 at North Sioux City to clinch the District 8A championship. The win was ignited by a strong first half.
Annie Roche scored 17 points and made two assists. Ellen Odson poured in two through the hoop from three point range, grabbed five rebounds and made four assists. Melissa Olson contributed with 12 points and six rebounds.
The Tanagers jumped ahead 16-8 after the first quarter, led 29-14 at halftime, and then led 32-22 after the third quarter.
The contest was well-played, with the Tanagers committing only 9 turnovers and the Huskies committing only 7.
The Tanagers heated things up from three-point range, hitting 6 of 10 from long distance.
�Coach Steckler does a great job with his girls,� said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. �He might be one of the more creative coaches that we play against every year. Offensively and defensively, he makes subtle changes all of the time that causes coaches and players to have to think about what they are doing.
�Our girls did a pretty good job of recognizing and making adjustments as the game went on. The key, however, was our defense,� he said. �To hold an opponent to 36 points is a pretty good job of defending.�
Vermillion made 9 of 17 from the line. The Tanagers sank 15 of 40 field goal attempts, while EP-J was 13 of 35 from the field. The Huskies hit 10 of 16 free throw tries.
The Tanagers had several fine individual efforts in the victory.
�Michelle Olson scored five points, grabbed six rebounds and made two assists,� coach Parish said.
