Vermillion can’t stop Hamlin’s charge

Vermillion can't stop Hamlin's charge By Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers were topped by the Hamlin Chargers 47-34 in girls basketball March 11 at Watertown in the second round game of the South Dakota Girls Class A Basketball Tournament.

Our girls played their hearts out tonight, said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. Hamlin got a lead and was content to sit on the ball for most of the game, hence the low scoring in the first three quarters. To start the fourth, the score could very easily have been a two-point game, but they hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to stretch it out to a 28-23 lead.

Hamlin then really began to try to milk the clock so we decided as a coaching staff that we would have to overplay on defense and try to cause some turnovers. We knew that by doing this we could cause some mistmatch problems for ourselves and give them some chances to drive to the basket, but we didnt come to Watertown to play a close game with them; we came to Watertown to try to get into the championship game, he said. Unfortunately, it didnt work out for us as we had hoped. They took very good care of the ball and when we were on offense it really took our legs away so that we missed some open shots that typically go in for us.

The Tanagers tried to stay in the game from three-point range, hitting 6 of 11 from long distance, but it wasnt enough.

The Tanagers led 8-6 after the first quarter, trailed 18-14 after the second quarter, and then trailed 28-23 after the third period.

The loss dropped Vermillion to a record of 13-10, while Hamlin improved to 20-4.

Vermillion sank 6 of 7 free throw attempts. The Tanagers made 11 of 36 field goal attempts, while Hamlin was 16 of 31 from the field. The Chargers sank 14 of 23 free throw attempts.

Vermillion was outrebounded 28-16.

Even with the loss, the Tanagers had several good individual efforts.

Jackie Thomas hit three more 3-pointers tonight and is shooting the ball extremely well right now, Coach Parish said. Alicia Brown gave us a huge spark off the bench to help us stay in the game by playing defense and hitting some shots for us.
