Deputy Pederson on active duty Most people around Vermillion know him as Deputy Pederson or as Paul, and two little girls know him as Daddy. Now he responds to Gunner's Mate 2nd Class Paul Pederson.
GM 2 Pederson left for San Diego, CA, on Feb. 27 to begin a year of active duty with the United States Navy. For six weeks he has been training in California and in mid-April he will leave with his Inshore Boat Unit for Kuwait. Once there Paul will spend eight to nine months patrolling the harbors of Kuwait under Operation Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom.
Pederson joined the Navy Reserves six years ago for an opportunity to see the world, never dreaming how far from home it would actually take him. His civilian job is as a deputy for the Clay County Sheriff's Office. He has been with them for 5 1/2 years, three of which he has been the DARE instructor for Vermillion and Wakonda.
GM2 Pederson also leaves home his wife of 7 1/2 years, Wendy, and two very young daughters, Sadie, 2 years, and Paige, 4 1/2 months. Wendy is also with the United States Navy Reserves as a Yeoman 3rd Class. She works as a Secretary for The University of South Dakota Physician Assistant Studies Program.
