Edelen receives distinguished alumna citation from Cottey Mary B. Edelen of Vermillion was recently presented with the Distinguished Alumna Citation from Cottey College in Nevada, MO, during Founder's Day held earlier this month.
Founder's Day weekend at Cottey was the beginning of the inauguration celebration for the 11th president, Dr. Judith Rogers.
Cottey College is a two-year school for women which specializes in leadership studies, the sciences and the arts. It emphasizes high academic standards with unique opportunities for growth through intellectual, cultural and residential experiences. Each year the second year students spend time in Europe studying.
Cottey is sponsored by PEO.
Edelen attended Cottey College in 1963-64 before transferring to The University of South Dakota. She was attending her 40th class reunion and was also her class agent. She and her sister, Debra, who also attended Cottey, will be a part of Cottey's Vacation College this summer.
The citation noted Edelen's 18-year tenure in the S.D. Legislature, the eight years she spent as director of the S.D. State Historical Society, her volunteer activities as well as currently serving on the Vermillion City Council.
She is a member of Chapter E, PEO; Rotary; a board member for the Center for Children and Families, the Welcome Table, Sioux Trails Girls Scouts and is active in her church.
In addition, she has served as a member of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services and currently serves on the board of American Nurses Credential Center in Washington, DC.
