Livestock facilities tour is May 11-12 A tour of livestock facilities in South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa is set for May 11-12.
SDSU Extension Structures and Environment Specialist Steve Pohl said the Minnkota Agri-Builders and Equipment Association is sponsoring the two day bus tour for builders, livestock equipment suppliers, consultants, government agency personnel, regulators, Extension educators, and ag teachers.
"The tour bus will originate in Willmar, MN, for the first pickup and the travel to Brookings, where the second pickup and tour will begin," Pohl said. "Day one tour sites will include an operating vertical bio-filter, a cattle feeding operation that uses three different housing management strategies, including a confined under-roof facility. The final stop on day one will be at the University of Nebraska Northeast Station located near Concord, NE, to discuss various swine and cattle research projects and tour facilities."
The group will then travel to Columbus, NE, for an overnight stay at the Holiday Inn Express motel. On the second day the tour will visit swine facilities that employ a tunnel cross ventilation mechanical system and will observe a bio-cap covered lagoon and bio-curtain swine facility both used for odor control. Pohl said the final tour stop will be near LeMars, IA, to visit a dairy that uses sand bedding and a flushing manure handling system.
