SD 52 reconstruction begun Construction crews have begun preparatory work on the SD 52 project west of Yankton. On Wednesday, March 23, crews started setting traffic control devices, clearing trees, removing fence and stockpiling topsoil.
They are also working on building a temporary detour around the bridge that will be replaced with a box culvert near the Lewis & Clark Campground entrance. Work has also begun to extend the box culvert near Captain Norms.
The next major phase of work will begin on Friday, April 1 as crews place asphalt on the north shoulder of the highway. The asphalt will be added to carry two-way traffic on the north half of the roadway, while the south half is rebuilt, similar to the way Broadway was constructed in Yankton the last two years. Traffic is set to be routed onto the north half of the highway by the second week in April.
The final roadway will be five lanes of concrete with asphalt shoulders from West City Limits Road to the Marina entrance, and three lanes of concrete from the Marina to the Campground entrance. All work is to be completed by Dec. 2.
Upper Plains Contracting of Aberdeen is the contractor for the $9.6 million project while Loiseau Construction of Flandreau does the grading work.
Weekly public meetings will be held every Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at DJ's Sports Rentals. A general public kick-off meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 7, at 6 p.m. in the meeting room at the Quarry Restaurant.
