Tanager track teams encounter challenges By Jim Prosser On Thursday, April 14, the Tanager track and field teams met a tough field of eight school teams in the Lennox Invitational. Participants were: Canton, Harrisburg, Howard, Lennox, Madison, Tri-Valley, Vermillion and West Central.
In the girls division, the Tanagers Anne Carlson was the only field events scorer, placing second in the long jump and fourth in the high jump. Nicole Orr won the 100M hurdles, timed in 16.2 seconds.
In the long distance runs: Emily Renner and Katarina Gombocz were one two in the 1600 M with times of 5:43 and 5:43.7 respectively. Gombocz placed third in the 3200 M; and Renner was fourth.
The 4X100M relay team of Nicole Orr, Brittney Babb, Anne Roche and Alisha Brown placed second but their time of 51.9 gave them a new state qualifying mark. The same four members bettered their 4X200 state qualifying mark with their third place finish time of 1:48.2.
The Vermillion girls team scored 65 total points for a third place against what coach Jim McGuire felt were the best Class A girls track teams in South Dakota.
The Tanager boys team didnt fare too well, either, as they placed seventh among the eight teams from South Dakota.
However, there were some bright spots, too. Ben Oberle won all three dashes, 100M, 200M, and 400M, bettering his state qualifying mark in the 400M with a 50.6 second time. He also placed third in the long jump. Donnie Stewart placed third in the shot put; and Casey Carlson was fifth in the 1600M run, as the other individual scorer.
The 4X100M and 4X200M relay team of Andrew Pier, Jerod Freidel, Reid Meierkort and Ryan Powell each were in a sixth place finish. The medley relay team of Meierkort, Freidel, Powell and Carlson claimed third place.
