VHS baseball team suffers loss to Yankton Bucks By Jim Prosser VHS played a double header vs. the Yankton Bucks on Friday, April 1 at Riverside Park in Yankton.
After their come-from-behind win over Beresford the previous night, it was assumed to be a different story this time. What happened was nearly the same type of scenario except for the end result.
This was a real pitchers duel with Yanktons Kyle Smoth tossing a seven-inning, one-run, five-hit performance, overcoming a two-hit gem pitched by a tandem of Kyle Mollet and Jason Donald for the Tanagers.
The Bucks hits were a lead-off double in the first inning (against starter Mollet), and a triple against Donald (following two walks) driving in two runs. Thats about the story to explain the 2-1 final score in favor of the home team. Each Tanager pitcher went three innings.
Line scores: Yankton 2 runs, 2 hits, 0 err., 5 lob; Vermillion 1 run, 5 hits, 2 err., 4 lob.
Ryan Mockler led the Tanager offense with a 2 for 3 batting and a run scored. Jeff Donnelly was 1 for 2, 1 rbi; Mollet and Brad Schaack were the other batters with a hit each.
The second game was a 15-0 wipeout for Yankton. The JV record is 1-1, and the Varsity season record stands at 1-1, with a doubleheader to be played at Lennox on Sunday April 3.
