VHS standout receives USD's largest scholarship Vermillion High School senior Michelle Rydell was recently awarded The University of South Dakota's largest scholarship, the Al Neuharth Scholarship for Excellence in Journalism, which covers tuition, fees, room and board, and a book allowance. Michelle is the daughter of James and Iris Rydell.
The Neuharth Scholarship was established in 1988 to attract, mentor, retain and support the best and brightest students pursuing careers in journalism. To be eligible for the Neuharth Scholarship, a student must show extraordinary promise in journalism and commit to work on USD's national award-winning newspaper, The Volante.
Recipients are accepted into a journalism preparatory program run at USD by the Al Neuharth Media Center, a journalism and scholarship program funded by the Freedom Forum.
Neuharth Scholarships are awarded to only two or three incoming freshmen every year.
Past recipients of the scholarship have gone on to work for some outstanding newspapers including The Wall Street Journal and the Des Moines Register.
