Letters Political axiom
To the editor:
Someone said of politics that "winning isn't the best thing, it's the only thing." Today, with the announcement that the Bush Administration plans to close Ellsworth AFB, we see another example of that political axiom.
During last year's Senate campaign, candidate John Thune said his friendship with President Bush would protect Ellsworth better than Tom Daschle's power and experience as Senate Democratic leader. Today, under the president's base closure recommendations, Nevada, the state represented by Tom Daschle's successor as Senate democratic leader, gains 1,059 jobs with no major closures while South Dakota loses nearly 4,000 jobs at Ellsworth.
According to the Air Force, closure of Ellsworth will have a negative $278 million impact on the area economy. But not to worry; John Thune is secure in the first year of a six year Senate term.
