Plain Talk honored at convention The staff of the Vermillion Plain Talk received first place in General Excellence for weekly newspapers of 1,151-2,050 circulation in the 2005 Better Newspapers Contest sponsored by the South Dakota Newspaper Association.
Plain Talk staff members also earned a first place award for Best Typography and Design.
David Lias, editor, received a second place award in the Best News Series category for his reporting on a cold case investigation involving two missing women.
He also received honorable mention awards in the Best Feature Story category, Best Editorial, and Best Local Humorous Column categories.
Lias received a second place in the Best Photo Series category for his coverage of the Vermillion High School Theatre Department's production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The judge commented, "Great job in capturing some of the musical's action and some of the character's emotion."
