Rasmussen receives state youth award Erin Rasmussen has been selected to receive the South Dakota Epsilon Sigma Alpha State Youth Award. She was sponsored by the Alpha Lamba chapter, Vermillion.
Outstanding leadership qualities, community involvement and service,
academic/extracurricular activities, awards, honors and involvement with family and church were criteria judges used in her selection.
Rasmussen was required to write a 500 word essay on "I Want to Lead." Three letters of recommendation from citizens in the community were also a necessity.
This young lady is a freshman at Vermillion High School where she serves as the freshman representative to the Student Council. Her other interests include playing percussion in the band and taking piano lessons.
As for sports, she is a member of the Vermillion Area Swim Team, and was selected to represent the state of South Dakota at the Midwest All-Star swimming competition held in Lawrence, KS in January 2003, and has qualified to compete at the South Dakota State Swim Meet for the past several years.
Awards for Rasmussen include the VFW Auxiliary Writing Contest, placing first in the district for two years: A+ Student of the Month sponsored by the Yankton Press and Dakotan and Sixth Grade Science Olymiad.
Community service has been a top priority in Rasmussen's life. She has assisted her mother and grandmother with the delivery of Meals on Wheels, participates in the "Welcome Table" program, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and collected food for the Food Pantry. She is a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, and has played the piano on several occasions in the church.
Rasmussen is the daughter of Ric and Kay Rasmussen and has a sister, Kara and brother, Jason.
She was honored at the State ESA Convention at the Mitchell Holiday Inn, April 30 at an award luncheon.
Congratulations are extended to this outstanding student. Her qualifications are now entered in the Epsilon Sigma Alpha International competition.
