Tour de Kota registration deadline looms Cyclists who want to bike the first-ever Tour de Kota have until May 15 to register.
The ride takes place June 10-18 and starts near the Missouri River at Yankton and follows the Mighty Mo to Pierre. The 443-mile ride resembles the trek made by the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Cyclists will experience a first-hand appreciation for the Corps of Discovery as well as healthy camaraderie, terrific food and a unique cycling experience across the land of Great Faces and Great Places.
"As the ride progresses, the landscape changes and each rider will see wildlife, farmland, prairie vistas, ranches and views of the Missouri like no other," said Owen Hotvet, marketing director of the Argus Leader, which is sponsoring Tour de Kota. "Each day of riding will be punctuated by local hospitality and fun as well as refreshing overnight stays on the banks of the Missouri River."
The ride begins in Yankton and has stops in Pickstown, Platte, Chamberlain and Pierre. Each community hosts various activities when the Tour de Kota passes through. The ride is for cyclists of all skill levels, including kids. Family bike-trail rides take place in Yankton and Pierre and other side-rides are available.
Registration is limited to 500 for this inaugural Tour de Kota. One- and three-day tour packages are available for those who want a shorter ride.
Event organizers plan to change the route each year, moving to different areas of the state.
Tour de Kota is designed to showcase the unique beauty and hospitality of South Dakota. It has been designated a Great Event by the South Dakota Office of Tourism. The Office of Tourism provides assistance to event coordinators and supports promotional efforts for designated events in order to boost visitor spending and to increase the economic impact in host communities. The Great Events campaign is one component of the 2010 Initiative, which includes doubling visitor spending to $1.2 billion by 2010.
