USD basketball signs two more 2005 recruits South Dakota men's head basketball coach Dave Boots has announced that Ross Winnekins, Plymouth, MN, and Darrick Leonard, Hazel Crest, IL, have signed national letters of intent to enroll at The University of South Dakota this fall and play basketball for the Coyotes.
The pair will join Mitch Begeman, Sioux Falls, and Rane Mergen, Dell Rapids, who signed last fall, to give Boots a recruiting class of four for next season.
Winnekins, a 6-9, 255-pound center from Wayzata High School, averaged 13.4 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. He was a Classic Lake All-Conference selection as well as an All-Area team pick for the Western and Northern Suburbs of Minneapolis, MN. Winnekins intends to major in business administration.
Leonard, a 6-2, 185-pound transfer from Lewis and Clark Junior College in Godfrey, IL, averaged 18.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists in the 2004-05 season. He shot 43.8 percent (105-240) from the field, including 58-of-141 (41.1 percent) from three-point range.
Leonard also made 44-of-49 (89.8 percent) at the free throw line. Leonard, who plans to major in education at USD, was a member of the All-NJCAA Region XXIV team and the Midwest Community College First Team.
