War dead will be honored on May 30 Vermillion will honor its war dead with special Memorial Day services on Monday, May 30 at 10 a.m. at the Clay County Veterans Memorial, located on the grounds of the Clay County Courthouse.
The public is invited to participate.
Andy Howe, commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3061, will give the introduction. After the Pledge of Allegiance is recited by those in attendance, the invocation will be given by Wilbur Tiahrt, VFW Post 3061 chaplain.
General John Logan's Orders will be read by Art Mabry and the guest speaker is Major Elmer "Sandy" Aakre of Vermillion, who is chaplain of the Army National Guard's 153rd Engineering Battalion.
Carl Carlson will give the honor roll call, and music will be provided by Steve Miller, Kurt Hakemer, Anthony Burbach and Blake Benson.
Wreaths will be placed by Norm Herren of the American Legion Post 1, Erna Carlson of the American Legion Post 1 Auxiliary, Delores Gregg, president of VFW Post 3061 Auxiliary, and Jerry Schafer of VFW Post 3061.
Another musical selection and the benediction, given by Tiahrt, will follow.
The VFW honor guard of Jerry Schafer, Joe Conroy, Leonard Bottolfson, Leroy Backhaus, Dave Wherry, Leo Powell, Jerami West, Ray Hofman, Mike Hauck and Mike Knudson will present the rifle salute to honor the dead.
