Blaze finish second in Vermillion Modified Tourney, take two in Canton The Vermillion Blaze finished second in the 12 & under division of the Vermillion Modified Tournament held June 11 and 12. The game reports are as follows:
Blaze � 14 Canton JD's House of Trophies � 4
Vermillion won their opening round game of pool play 14-4 taking advantage of 14 walks and base hits from Bethany Prinsen, Kayla Munger, Sierra Allen, Sarah Szymonski and Ellen Brown. Molly LeCates, Claire Jones and Szymonski each scored twice in the three inning contest. Allen was the winning pitcher.
Platte � 17 Blaze � 15
The Blaze lost their second game by two runs after rallying from a seven run deficit. Leading hitters were Sierra Allen, Jana Bye, Sarah Szymonski, Clair Jones and Ellen Brown. Bye and Melissa Moe each scored three times for the Blaze. Kayla Munger took the pitching loss and had to leave the game in the second inning after tagging out a runner in a home plate collision. Allen finished the game in relief.
Blaze � 4 Bonesteel-Fairfax � 3
With two outs in the bottom on the last inning, Claire Jones singled, stole second and third and eventually scored on a past ball to give the Blaze a 4-3 victory over the top seeded Bonesteel-Fairfax. The Blaze played an outstanding defensive game recording 17 outs on ground and fly balls, including three in one inning by Ellen Brown. Jones and Bethany Prinsen each had two hits and Sierra Allen had one. Allen was also the winning pitcher going all six innings. Bonesteel-Fairfax went 3-0 in pool play and the loss was their first in two years.
Platte � 12 Blaze � 11
In the championship game the Blaze lost an exciting one-run game to Platte. Vermillion was down eight runs early in the game but came back to take a one-run lead in the last inning. Platte then scored twice in the bottom of the inning to win the championship. Leading the offense were Bethany Prinsen with three hits, Sarah Szymonski and Sierra Allen had two, and Molly LeCates and Ellen Brown had one. Allen went the distance pitching for the Blaze.
In other action the Blaze won two games in Canton. They defeated JD's House of Trophies 16-6. Kayla Munger was the winning pitcher with nine strikeouts in the four-inning contest. In the second game Vermillion recorded an 18-13 win over the Canton Crushers. Lindsay Robinet led the offense with a single and a triple. Molly LeCates also recorded two hits and Munger had a double. Munger was the winning pitcher in relief.
