Celebrate Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds at library The 2005 Vermillion Public Library Summer Reading Program will celebrate "Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds."
Special activities include a Harry Potter party to celebrate the release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Mr. Twister the Balloon Man, a Midsummer Day's Reading Party, a Dennis Warner Kids' Concert, David Lloyd's magic and puppetry, and "Dragons Are Too Seldom," Markie Scholz's wonderful dragon show. In addition, storytellers, the Zoo Man, and water fun day will return for yet another year of exciting activities.
The library will also offer craft time for school age children on Tuesday afternoons starting at 1:30 p.m. and movies about dragons, dreams and daring deeds on Wednesday afternoons. Films for children of all ages will begin at 1 p.m., while those for young adults (age 13 and up) start at 3 p.m.
The summer reading program is open to all ages from beginning readers (starting at age 2) to adults. It runs from June 6 to Aug. 5. Beginning Readers (age 2 to first grade) must read or be read to 15 minutes per day, and Intermediate Readers (grades 2-6) must read 30 minutes per day to receive prizes at a 30-day party and 60-day party. Advanced Readers (grades 7-12) will be required to read 2,000 pages to receive a prize and will work toward a group goal of 70,000 pages in order to take part in a special activity.
Adult readers are also encouraged to participate and will receive a prize after reading five books. After achieving their reading goals, all groups will be eligible to sign up for a prize drawing at the Closing Party on Aug. 5.
Additional information and reading logs will be provided at the Kick-Off Party on June 6. Lunch will start at noon with informational parties held throughout the afternoon: Beginning Readers at 1 p.m., Intermediate Readers a 2 p.m., and Advanced and Adult Readers at 3 p.m.
