Richard W. (Dick) Johnson was born Dec. 23, 1914 to A.W.W. and Agnes Dott Johnson in Sioux City, IA.

On Aug. 15, 1944 Dick married Una Marcene Heikes, in rural Obert, NE. They were married for 60 years. Two children were born to this union, a son, Thomas L. Johnson, and a daughter, Patricia F. Johnson.

Richard, grew up on a farm near Wakefield, NE, and attended school in Allen and Wakefield, NE. Dick chose shoe repair for a career because it allowed him to make a living despite his disability.

His first job took him to a short-lived stop in Broken Bow, NE. Dick found a position in Laurel, NE, where he would say that he "learned to do invisible shoe repair" and worked there for four years.

In 1942 he moved to Hartington, NE, where he had been offered a job, but ended up buying the shop and operating it until 1947. It was in Hartington that he met his wife Una. In Feb. of 1947, Dick moved to Vermillion, where he operated his shop until 1975.

After retiring from the shop, Dick refurbished bicycles and sold them to people who couldn't afford a new bike.

Dick wanted to live to see the year 2000 and to see a bridge built over the Missouri River at Vermillion. Both of those wishes came true.

After moving to Vermillion, he and Una began attending the Vermillion Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, now Hillside Community Church. Dick and Una became charter members of the church. Dick served as church treasurer, then missionary treasurer, and an usher for many years.

Survivors include his loving and faithful wife of 60 years, Una; son Tom and wife, Diana Johnson, Henderson, NE; daughter Patty Johnson Busenitz and husband Roger, Newton, KS; five grandchildren and their spouses; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty and Mel Larson, Meckling; one brother, Robert D. and Flo Johnson, Sun City, CA; two brothers-in-law, Paul Gniffke, Saratoga, CA, and Tom Eagling, Tucson, AZ; and many nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Katrine Bigelow, Ruth Gniffke, and Hazel Eagling.

One special niece, Jean Ann Schram, gave her time and energy to help assist Una in caring for Dick.
