Post #1 baseball team ends losing streak with 9-8 win over EPJ by Jim Prosser When the 2005 version of Vermillions team scored a run in the first inning, hopes for a good start were high.
However, it became a nightmare as Elk Point/Jeffersons James Chicoine held the home team to four runs as EPJ racked up eight runs to take the lead through 3 1/2 innings.
Then the Post #1 gang came alive, scoring five runs sparked by Zach Weisss opening single, followed by a fielders choice and four consecutive hits (including a double by Ryan Mockler from the DH slot), a sac fly from Eric Chase, and a delayed steal by Jeff Donnelly, all of whom contributed to the successful 9-8 victory.
Jason Donald tossed a steady game after the first two innings, giving up six hits, six earned runs, with four Ks, (he also hit three batters).
Line scores are: Post # 1 9 H, 12 R, 5 E, 5 LOB; EPJ 8 R, 6 H, 1 E, 4 LOB.
Vermillions offensive stats: Ben Oberle 1 for 4, 2 runs; Kyle Mollet 2 for 4, 2 runs; Reid Meierkort 3 for 3, 1 run, 3 RBIs; BJ Campbell 1 for 2, 1 run, 2 RBIs; Mockler 1 for 3, 1 run, 1 rbi; Donnelly 2 for 2, 1 run; and Weiss 1 for 3, 1 run.
In game two, Vermillion was out-hit by EPJ 10-9, and lost the conflict 16-4. In spite of a three-run outburst in the second inning, the home team couldnt overcome a rash of errors (six of them) as EPJ had eight- and six-run innings in the five-inning 10-run rule-shortened game.
Ryan Gilbertson was the starter, giving up 10 runs (two unearned), on four hits, and two BBs and a team defensive four errors, to suffer the loss.
Meierkort went 1/3 of an inning charged with three runs, and was relieved by Oberle who gave up three runs on two hits, with two team errors.
Offense for Post #1 included Oberle 1 for 2, 1 run, 2 RBIs; Meierkort 3 for 3, 1 rbi; Donnelly 1 for 2, 1 run; and Jason Donald 2 for 3, 1 run, 1 rbi; Eric Chase 1 run.
