Zimmerman, Chapman vie for SE Ward; other wards seated By M. Jill Karolevitz Residents of the Southeast Ward in Vermillion will be the only voters going to the polls for the city election June 7 as Dennis Zimmerman and Jere Chapman vie for the lone opening on the city council.
Zimmerman is seeking his third term as alderman.
I would like to stay on the council and see Vermillion continue to grow and increase its tax base, he said.
Zimmerman, who has lived in Vermillion nearly all his life, is the travel coordinator for the state of South Dakota.
Chapman, who owns four restaurants in Vermillion, is also no stranger to the city council. He has previously served a one-year appointed term.
Ive always been involved in the community at different levels, he said. I feel that somebody with a business background can benefit the city council when it comes to spending tax dollars wisely.
Chapman has lived in Vermillion since 1982.
The term of office for the election winner is three years.
The other ward positions were not contested, therefore, petitioners Nathan J. Adams (Northwest) and Roger G. Jeck (Central) will take office on July 5. Adams will replace Tom Davies and Jeck will take Lynne Days seat on the council.
Kevin Annis will continue to serve in the Northeast Ward, as no petition was filed against him.
