Assistance available to buy school supplies The Rural Office of Community Services, Inc. (ROCS) of Lake Andes has been awarded Community Service Block Grant Discretionary funding to provide school supplies for children of low income families in our 22 county service area.
Unfortunately, many low income families cannot afford to purchase all the needed school supplies for their children to participate in the class room. The School Supply Project will assist these families in getting the supplies they need to build a foundation of learning to help them gain knowledge and confidence they need to succeed.
ROCS will use an application process and recognize the 125 percent federal poverty guidelines as the criteria for eligibility. Eligible, school age children aged K-12 will be able to use a voucher to purchase school supplies including back packs, pencils, notebooks, folders, crayons, glue, scissors, rulers, tissues and other supplies. Many schools provide a list of the necessary supplies for each grade.
ROCS will work closely with local vendors to establish charge accounts so that the vouchers can be used locally as much as possible so that the participating families can get their supplies in their hometown.
Applicants must reside in ROCS service area including the following counties: Aurora, Bon Homme, Brule, Buffalo, Charles Mix, Clay, Davison, Douglas, Gregory, Hanson, Hutchinson, Jerauld, Jones, Lincoln, Lyman, Mellette, Sanborn, Todd, Turner, Tripp, Yankton and Union counties.
