Cyclones undefeated in Yankton soccer tourney The Vermillion Cyclones U-10 boys soccer team traveled to Yankton June 18 and 19 for the inaugural Yankton Invitational Soccer Tournament, and completed play by winning all three matches.
Game one had the Cyclones matched with the Fire of Spencer, IA. In a high scoring affair, the Cyclones prevailed on the strength of six goals by Tanner Settles for a final score of 7-4.
In the second game, the Cyclones pulled out a close 2-1 win over the Sioux Falls Tigers on the strength of goals by Settles and Heath Pederson. Strong defensive performances were contributed by Jake Hogan, Ethan James, and Michael Brunick.
For the opportunity to complete an undefeated run in the tournament, Vermillion took the field for their final match against the Yankton Storm. Playing in very hot conditions, the Cyclones took a 2-1 lead into halftime. Regrouping for the second half, the Cyclones put in a determined effort enroute to a 6-2 victory.
Dylan Fischbach and Alex Robertson put in gallant second-half performances to thwart the Yankton attack. Scoring in the game for the Cyclones were Settles and Pederson with two apiece, and David Day and Michael Brunick each with one goal. Playing as goalkeeper for the Cyclones throughout the tournament was Christian �Hands� Wasley.
