Families take advantage of appreciation weekend Many people visited South Dakota state parks this past weekend to take part in the Military Appreciation Weekend activities.
Were pleased that so many families were able to take advantage of the weekend and spend some well-deserved time together, said Doug Hofer, state parks director. Families spent the weekend attending the many activities held in the parks, using the recreational equipment, and just relaxing and visiting with each other.
Managers reported that most of the campgrounds were full and that many of the first-come sites filled up quickly on Friday. Special events during the weekend, such as flag ceremonies, guided hikes, picnics, educational programs and more, were well attended. With warm weather across the state, visitors also spent much of their time cooling off.
in the water or boating.
According to Hofer, the Military Appreciation Weekend served to thank both past and current military personnel and their families for their sacrifices. In addition to the activities held, military personnel and their immediate families received free park entrance at all state parks and free fishing on all South Dakota waters during the weekend.
Educational programming and activities continue in the parks all summer long with weekend programming, Walk in the Park hikes and several special events. Visit www.sdgfp.info/Parks or call your local park for more information on upcoming events.
