Hensley named 'Beating the Odds' state, regional winner Kristen Hensley is the Head Start Association regional winner of the "Beating the Odds" award given to parents to acknowledge their triumphs.
Hensley has been an Early Head Start and Head Start parent in the Head Start Pre-Birth through Five Program at The University of South Dakota for four years. During this time she has overcome immense obstacles to earn a degree in psychology from USD.
Hensley was nominated by her Early Head Start Family Advocate Dawna Andersen who has been amazed by her accomplishments when faced with many obstacles, including being the single parent of two small children, overcoming severe health problems, and all the while continuing to work toward her degree.
When people found out my degree was in psychology, they would tell me ?youre never going to find a job with that degree, Hensley said. Guess what, I did, and it is a great job.
Hensley was named the South Dakota Beating the Odds award winner in May of this year. Her name was then submitted to Region VIII where she was named the regional winner. Hensley will compete with other regional winners for national honors. She will be acknowledged for her accomplishments in Washington, D.C., later this year.
Head Start is a federal program serving children 0-5 and expectant families. The program is free to eligible families and serves the counties of Clay, Lincoln, Union and Turner.
