Obituaries Evelyn B. Mellem

Evelyn B. Mellem, 82, of Irene, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2005 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.�

Evelyn Beatrice Gustad was born Oct. 14, 1922 on the family farm, the oldest child of Einer and Bernice (Lowe) Gustad.�Evelyn was baptized, confirmed and married at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Volin.�She was a longtime member of Trondhjem Lutheran Church.

She attended the rural McFarland School through elementary grades and then attended Irene High School.�She transferred to Volin High School where she graduated at the age of 16.

Growing up on the family farm, she was her dad�s hired man.�She was also the neighborhood beautician, giving hair cuts and permanents.�She also worked for many years as a secretary for a lawyer in Yankton. She enjoyed working with children, as she spent many years as a Sunday School Superintendent, teacher and as a 4-H club leader.

Evelyn married Virgil Mellem on February 6, 1955.�The couple began their married life on the Mellem home place, later purchasing their own farm where they lived until retirement. They were parents of four children; Marcia, Paul, Charlene and Keith.�

Virgil passed away in1987 and Evelyn later moved to Irene.�

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, worked as a janitor at the school and volunteered delivering meals on wheels. She also enjoyed her flowers. Evelyn was a loyal supporter of her grandchildren in their school and summer activities.�The time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was the joy of her life.�

Those who cherish her memory are her children, Marcia (Dan) Sathe, Irene, Paul (Julie) Mellem, Volin, Charlene (Kevin) Healy, Irene; daughter-in-law Sharon (Pete) Van Driel, Irene; sister, Sharon (Tom) Freng, Yankton; 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three special little ones.

She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil, son Keith and granddaughter Erin.

She will be greatly missed.

Funeral services were 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 27 at Trondhjem Lutheran Church, rural Volin.�Burial was in Trondhjem Cemetery.

Visitation began at 4 p.m., Tuesday, July 26 with a prayer service at 8 p.m. at Hansen Funeral Home in Irene.

Blanche M. Christenson

Blanche M. Christenson, age 92, of Vermillion, died Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at Sioux Valley Vermillion Care Center.

She was born Oct. 9, 1912, in Parker, to Jim and Emma (Fogleman) Lineback. She graduated from eighth grade at rural school in the Parker area. She married Harold Christenson Dec. 3, 1935, in Parker. He died May 20, 1981. The couple farmed in the Vermillion area until retirement in 1971 and moved into Vermillion.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion. Blanche loved playing bingo and cards, and rides in the country.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Russell Johnson, Vermillion; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, William Harold; a daughter, Marlene Whilhelm; four sisters and three brothers.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 25, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion, with the Rev. Ed Anderson officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, rural Vermillion.

Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion. There was a 7 p.m. prayer service Sunday at the funeral home.

Frances V. Peterson

Frances V. Peterson, age 89, of Meckling died Saturday, July 23, 2005, at Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital.

She was born June 19, 1916 in Meckling to Moritz and Mabel (Westeen) Klatt. She graduated from Meckling High School.

She married H. Barton Peterson on Dec. 3, 1935 in Meckling. He died Oct. 7, 1986.

She was a member of Bergen Lutheran Church, rural Meckling, and the Ladies Aid of the Meckling Cemetery Association.

She is survived by a son, Omar Peterson, Meckling; a nephew, Oleen Westeen, Lesterville; and a cousin, Don Langfeldt, of Michigan.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 28 at Bergen Lutheran Church, rural Meckling, with the Rev. Linda Jorgensen officiating. Burial was in Meckling Cemetery.

Visitation was from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at the Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion. There was a 7 p.m. prayer service Wednesday at the funeral home.

George M. Ferris

George M. Ferris, 64, of Vermillion, died Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at the Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital.

George was born August 4, 1940 in Hollywood, CA to Robert and Lucille (Thompson) Mattox. He attended Vermillion schools, and graduated from Vermillion High School. He also attended school at SDSU and USD.

George married Karen Knutson on Aug. 12, 1966 in Hudson. He worked as the business manager for Ferris Farms in Vermillion until retiring due to ill health in 2000.

He is survived by his wife, Karen of Vermillion; his father, Robert Mattox of N. Hollywood, CA; and a son, Mark Robert Ferris of Atascadero, CA. He is also survived by a sister, Mary Ellen Haller of Thousand Oaks, CA, a half- sister, Nelita Boom of Grass Valley, CA, and a half brother, Gerald Robert Mattox Jr. of Calabasas, CA.

Memorial services were held 10 a.m. Friday, July 29 at the United Church of Christ in Vermillion with burial of ashes at a later date.

Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion is handling the arrangements.

Lynn Milton

Lynn Milton, teacher, artist and wife of John Milton of Vermillion, died Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at Prince of Peace Nursing Home.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 30, , at 3 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion.

She is survived by her daughter, Nanci Milton-Fitterman and her husband, Alan, and a brother, Mark Hinderlie.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John.
