The Bluffs Bulletin Board Senior golfers welcome cool temps

On Tuesday, July 26, 37 seniors came out for a good game of golf at The Bluffs on a beautiful, cool morning. Ten birdies were achieved plus a number of good scores were submitted. Back with the low score was Mo Marcotte and his team of Ken Beringer and Cleland Cook bringing in a 34 on the front nine. Next at 36 was Jim Stewart, Lloyd Helseth and Dick Gregory giving honors to Lloyd for his putting. Scoring a 37 was Dave Bak, Don Baer and Quentin Oleson. Two teams had a 38. Leading with the tie breaker was a foursome of Elmer Mount, Ross Johnson, Maurice Erickson and Tim OConnor followed by Vern Holter, Bob Lund, Jack Doyle and Van Pierce. Three teams scored a 39 but only two of the teams won prizes. 39A was Turk Pilker, Bob Solomon and Howard Connors, and at 39B came Pete Berglund, Jim Reed, Jack Stewart and Guy Button. Shots of the day a 60-foot birdie putt on #3 by Dave Bak and a 45-foot par putt on #4 by Lloyd Helseth. Reminder!! Next week we play on Monday morning (same time) instead of Tuesday. Van Pierce was welcomed back following surgery. Hot, sticky night for W.E.L.L. Our host team, Pinnacles, had a hot, humid night to work with. It was so hot that many of the golfers were forcing fluids to stay hydrated (or forget about the heat). Playing the back nine this week, the hot weather brought out some heated scores. There were three pin prizes placed on the course. Two were for golfers with a hot club. These were awarded to Kari Holden for the longest putt on #10 and to Karrie Plate for the longest drive on #11. And boy, Karries drive was flaming down the fairway, landing a mere 10 feet short of the green. The third pin prize was for a golfer who remained cool. Melanie Rittberger won the prize for the shortest drive on #18. Karrie Plate added another outing in which she scored the low gross. This week she shot a blistering 35. Two women tied for low net, both with great scores. Shooting a 29 were Nikki Peters (52-23) and Ruby Plate (44-15). Rounding out the statistics, four birdies were shot distributed between two golfers. Jenny Chandler birdied #12 and #14 while Karrie Plate birdied #11 and #18. Inside the clubhouse Kathy Merrigan-Manning won the Quackson. In addition to the scores reported above, and the great shots, there were also several, lets say less than usual types of shots. This included a golfers version of the Hokey Pokey one foot in the sand one foot out. Were not sure if the forced fluids had anything to do with this golfing style. Wednesday ladies enjoy activities

There were 29 ladies served. Desserts were provided by Jayne Merrigan and Lorraine Brunick.

We had one guest, Alyce Christensen

Golf report: Played Bin-go, Bango, Bongo with No Rough. The winners were Helen Brown, Edith Nelson and Karine Amundson.

Dominoes report: There were three tables. Low scorers: Vanetta Youngworth, Char Brunick and Eileen Turner. High scoreres were: Fritz Leffler, Ardyce Meisenholder and Babe Hurowitz (Babe had the double blank three times).

Bridge report: We had one table of bridge ladies. Ellie Davis was high and Lorraine Brunick was low.

As usual everyone had fun and even though it was a bit humid, golf was great also.

Mens League

weekly report

On July 21, with hot breezes and sunny conditions, the seventh week of league play was contested on the front nine at The Bluffs. The conditions played havoc with the scores, as only one player carded a sub-par round among the 200 competitors making the attempt.

Results for the week in the American division had best score for Midwest Homes with 19 points, Bank of the West Ins. with 18.5, and Sandtrappers with 18.

Low individual scratch score of 37 (net 34) went to Steve Ward who played both sessions with duplicate scores. Other scores under 40 were Brian Steele and Ellis Jensen, 38 each, and Dennis Chandler, 39.

There were 13 birdies reported for the day with Ward recording two in each round and Jensen, Steele, and Chandler each reporting two.

The National division had only two teams with high point scores: Americlean 19.5; and LBA 17.5. Coldwell Banker and Bogey + each had 16.5.

Individual player scores fared a little better than the other division but it still was not very pretty. Nick Hovden led the league with a 30 (net 29), recording eagles on #2 and 6, and two birdies (#s 1 and 5). Mike Billiet, Rick Haught, and Mike Wettstein each had a 39; Joe Villalobos 40 (net 33).

Twelve birdies were reported, as well as Hovdens two eagles. Billiet and Haught each carded two.
