Trick Pony performs Saturday Trick Ponys members include Keith Burns, Heidi Newfield and Ira Dean. by David Lias Vermillion is lucky to catch a rising star this weekend.
The country group Trick Pony, whose new single Its A Heartache, soared to the top of the charts after its release in mid-April, will perform Saturday night at the Clay County Fairgrounds in Vermillion.
Mike Mortensen, owner of Open Mikes in downtown Vermillion, is playing a key role in bringing the band here.
Ive seen this band seven or eight times myself, he said. Theyre real high-energy, a lot of fun. Theyre categorized as country western, but theyre more country rock.
One of the reasons we picked them is weve been trying to bring a few things to town, and we hope Vermillion can support something like this. It would be fun to do without having to drive to another town all of the time,Mortensen said.
The bands members Ira Dean, Keith Burns, and Heidi Newfield have two albums under their belt and have earned awards from both the Academy of Country Music and the American Music Awards.
The reason I picked this band is Ive seen a lot of bands, and these guys are some of the best entertainers, Mortensen said.
In 2004, Trick Pony received nominations from both the CMA and the ACMA for best vocal group.
In 2003, the band received a Grammy nomination for best country performance by a duo or group with its vocal Just What I Do.
Theyve had a number of pretty big hits and theyre still cranking them out, Mortensen said. Theyre a good looking band ? theyve got a real good mesh between them.
The band will perform on a large 40-foot by 30-foot stage with full lighting at the fairgrounds. Tickets can be purchased either through Ticketmaster or Open Mikes.
Gates at the fairgrounds will open at 7 p.m. Saturday, followed by performances by The Clay Creek Deaf Cowboy Band.
Rossana Holmes will be the opening act at 8 p.m. on the main stage. Trick Ponys performance will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m.
