Troopers will patrol roadways over holiday This Fourth of July weekend, South Dakota Highway Patrol Troopers will implement an aggressive statewide schedule to help save lives by educating the public about safe driving behavior.

"We increase the number of troopers on South Dakota roadways and at events to help encourage citizens' sense of personal responsibility," said Col. Dan Mosteller, Highway Patrol superintendent. "Since 2000, 21 people have died in crashes on South Dakota roadways during the Fourth of July holiday period. We can all help save lives by driving responsibly, wearing our seat belts, and calling 911 to report drunk drivers," Mosteller said.

Troopers statewide will conduct enforcement and education activities, in conjunction with the Fourth of July holiday, from Friday, July 1, beginning at 6 p.m. to July 4 at midnight.

District 1 (Aberdeen) activities include:

? Five sobriety checkpoints.

? Four saturation patrols.

? Five safety checkpoints.

? Newspaper and radio public service announcements.

District 2 (Sioux Falls) activities include:

? Five sobriety checkpoints.

? One safety checkpoint.

? July 1 – 2: Tri-State Enforcement campaign with Iowa and Nebraska troopers.

? Newspaper and radio public service announcements.

District 3 (Rapid City) activities include:

? Three sobriety checkpoints.

? Two saturation patrols.

? July 3: Mt. Rushmore safety patrol.

? Newspaper and radio public service announcements.
