U-14 Stingers go 2-2 in league tourney by Jim Prosser The U�14 Vermillion Stingers softball team was entered in the Sioux Falls League tournament played at the Sherman Park softball complex on Saturday and Sunday, July 9 and 10.
The results of game one was a Stinger victory 10-1 in five innings over the Brandon Blast. Jenny Bye pitched a five hitter, registering seven Ks.
Highlights of the game � tied after three innings, Vermillion opened the fourth with four straight hits (Brittany Bye � 2 b, Donika Crichton � 1 b, Megan Amundson � 2 b, and Ashley Oullette � HR!), to break the tie with four runs. Other Stinger contributors were: Brinna Brinkmaan � 1 for 2, 2 runs; Chelsea Houska � 1 for 3, 1 run; and J. Bye � 1 for 3, 1 run.
Game two matched Stingers vs. Sioux Fall Flamez with a 1-7 loss. Jenny Bye took the loss, recording 5 Ks. The team scoring was a meager one run scored by Brittany who was 1 for 3; and Ashley had the rbi.
On Sunday, July 10, the Stingers had an engagement with Sparx in the third round game. This time the results were more to our liking as Jenny Bye pitched a one hit shutout recording seven Ks in the seven inning stint. While her teammates could muster only two runs, it was enough for the 2-0 win. Oullette and Jenny Bye scored the runs.
The fourth game was a six inning loss to Sioux Falls Flash 1-9. Brianna Brinkman pitched two innings and left the mound with a 1-1 tie.
Chelsea Houska relieved and took the loss; Donica Crichton scored the only Vermillion run.
The Stingers placed fourth in the league tournament and will now enter the state tournament this weekend against Brandon Explosion. After that, they will travel to Lawrence, KS for the national tournament.
