Vermillion Teeners earn tourney championship The Vermillion Teeners hit the road playing 13 games over a 10 day stretch at five different cities. Vermillion went 9-4 during the road trip raising their season record to 30-6. The highlight of the trip came at its final stop where Vermillion was able to win the South Sioux City Teeners Tournament on July 2.
In Elk Point on June 23, Vermillion took both games by scores of 10-1 and 16-3.
Pipestone was the destination for Vermillion on Saturday where they met the Brandon Valley Thundercats in the opening game. The Thundercats scored three runs in the first and then added three in the fifth to win by a final score of 6-1. Marshall, MN handed Vermillion its second loss of the day by the final score of 7-1. Vermillion could not get much going in either game offensively and defensively they did not make the plays at critical times in both games.
On Sunday, Vermillion played much better and beat Luverne by a 6-3 score. Game two found Vermillion playing the only unbeaten team left in the tourney. Vermillion and Pipestone battled each other and at the end of five-and-a-half, Vermillion was ahead 2-0. Vermillion did what they needed to do to win by playing good defense and some timely hitting, but in the bottom of the sixth, Pipestone took advantage of some opportunities and rallied to a 3-2 win.
The Yankton Reds and Vermillion met at Riverside Park on Monday. In game one, Vermillion broke open a close game in the third by scoring nine runs and eventually winning in five innings by 13-2. Game two found Vermillion leading 6-2 at the end of five innings, but Vermillion added eight runs in the top of the sixth to win by 14-2.
Vermillion was at Beresford for a double header on Thursday, June 2. In game one, Vermillion trailed 2-0 after three innings, but took the lead for good in the fourth as they scored five runs then added one more in the fifth. Beresford threatened in the bottom of the fifth, but Vermillion held on and won by a 6-5 score. Vermillion won the second game by a 26-7 score after five.
In the South Sioux City Tournament on July 2, Vermillion and the Reds battled it out in the opening game. Vermillion left the bases loaded in the first while only being able to score one and also was unable to capitalize in the sixth when the first two batters of the inning reached safely. Vermillion allowed three South Sioux runs in the first two innings then then held them in check the rest of the way. The final in seven innings was Reds 3 Vermillion 2.
In games two and three of the tourney, Vermillion finally got its hitting shoes on. Vermillion posted a 10-0 win over the Sioux City Cardinals in game two. The Westwood Rebels undefeated in the tourney and coming off an 8-5 win over the Reds would be Vermillion�s final opponent. Vermillion jumped out to an early 6-2 lead after one, then withstood some defensive errors while continuing to score themselves. Vermillion eventually won the game by a 16-11 margin. The Reds, Rebels, and Vermillion all ended 2-1, but through tie breakers that were in place, Vermillion earned the tournament championship.
Vermillion�s upcoming schedule finds them in Yankton on the weekend to play the Yankton Lakers, Reds, and Sioux City Crusaders.
