Follow the footsteps of Lewis & Clark Sept. 3

Follow the footsteps of Lewis & Clark Sept. 3 Runners and walkers have an opportunity to follow the footsteps of Lewis and Clark to historic Spirit Mound on Sept. 3 in the Spirit Mound 10K/5K Run.

For the first time, the Spirit Mound Run/Walk will also include a 5K course. Starting time is 8 a.m. at Hwy. 19 and 50 for both courses. All participants will receive Spirit Mound Run T-shirts, and a free ticket to the USD Coyotes vs. Truman State football game that same day.

The 10K USATF certified course will follow Hwy. 19, starting at Hwy. 50 in Vermillion, to Spirit Mound Historic Prairie Park. The 10K course is paved highway crossing the Vermillion River and prairie and farmlands. The 5K run will circle the mound on country roads and end at the parks parking lot.

The Spirit Mound 10K/5K Run is unique. The run ends at the base of Spirit Mound, a Native American landmark. Lewis and Clark were so curious to see the mound, held sacred by Native Americans and said to be protected by small spirits, that they made a special detour from the Missouri River to climb to the top. Spirit Mound is therefore one of only two or three places where we can walk in the actual footsteps of Lewis and Clark.

Following the race, participants and family and friends will be able to participate in a smudging ceremony. The ceremony is a Native American ritual to bless visitors who wish to climb Spirit Mound and protect them from the spirits of the mound.

Although the 10K is a certified course for serious runners, we encourage everyone to walk or run either course and enjoy this unique experience, said Judy Clark, chair of the race committee. Other members are Colette Abbott, Barbara Yelverton and Keley Smith-Keller.

The Spirit Mound 10K/5K Run will benefit the W.H. Over Museum of Natural and Cultural History in Vermillion. The museum, founded in 1883, preserves and interprets natural and cultural history of South Dakota. It has the largest collection of natural and cultural artifacts in the state.

Awards will be given to first place male and female overall winners, as well as the first three place winners in each age category. Registration fee is $20 before Aug. 19, and $25 after that date. Register on-line at www.AllSportCentral.com or send check and T-shirt size to: W.H. Over Museum, Attn: Spirit Mound 10K, 1110 Ratingen Street, Vermillion, SD 57069.

Were very grateful to our sponsors, USD Book & Supply, Vermillion Medical Clinic, Sioux Valley Hospital Vermillion, Dr. Charles Yelverton, Hy-Vee Food Store and Jones Food Center for making this fundraiser possible, Clark said.
