Literary organization to host poetry slam The Vermillion Literary Project (VLP) invites everyone to the Vermillion Literary Project Poetry Slam on Aug. 25.
The slam, featuring professional writer and South Dakota Review editor Brian Bedard, will be held at the Coffee Shop Gallery in downtown Vermillion.
Prizes will be awarded to slam winners, and slam poets should bring at least three poems. The competition is free and open to the public. Everyone is encouraged to attend and to compete.

Bedard received an M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of Montana and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Utah. He is a professor of English at USD, where he directs the creative writing program. His short stories have been published nationwide in magazines such as Alaska Quarterly Review, Cimarron Review, The Macguffin, and North Dakota Quarterly.
, Quarterly West, and Snake Nation Review. His story, �News from Nevada,� was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2003. His story collection, Hour of the Beast, was published by Chariton Review Press.
