South Dakota teachers attend writing institute

South Dakota teachers attend writing institute Eleven outstanding South Dakota teachers attended the Dakota Writing Project 2005 Invitational Summer Institute from June 6-30 at The University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

Teachers spent time each day writing and leading demonstrations on the teaching of writing, which will benefit classroom instruction. The teachers also produced professional articles and other pieces of writing, some of which will be published in the DWP e-zine (electronic magazine) toward the end of this summer.

Highlights of the summer institute included a writing marathon, a Lewis-and-Clark trek to Spirit Mound with journal writing, a potluck with stories of writing connected to food, and presentations by USD assistant professor and freshman writing director Christopher Ervin (portfolios), USD associate professor and poet Lee Ann Roripaugh (poetry and short fiction), USD librarian Carol Leibiger (information literacy), and DWP teacher-consultant Jean Moulton (rhetorical figures of speech).

The teachers also participated in the National Writing Projects E-Anthology by posting drafts of writing, responding to others writing and contributing to online conversations about teaching and the teaching of writing with teachers from all over the United States.

Teachers who participated in the institute included Mary Begley of Vermillion. The facilitators were Nancy Kampfe, a teacher from Bennett County and Michelle Rogge Gannon, an English professor at USD.

The teachers will continue to enjoy the benefits of being part of the Dakota Writing Project, with membership on a DWP email discussion list, a fall reunion scheduled for Oct. 1, and invitations to join in other events and activities of the Dakota Writing Project in the future.

The Dakota Writing Project is affiliated with the National Writing Project, a federally funded, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the teaching of writing in Americas classrooms.
