Gregoire wins first CC meet as an Eagle Crisp leaves crunching against new running shoes signal another season of cross country. Beresford Invitational Cross Country Meet played host to this years first meet of the season on Friday, Aug. 26.
The newly formed class A Irene-Wakonda Eagles finished sixth out of 15, but took the best individual performance of the day. Senior Robert Gregoire, despite running a few extra meters as he took a wrong turn, won the invite finishing with the time 17:36.36.
Gregoires teammates, Matt Davis and Chris Nelsen, placed 21st with a time of 19:48.45; and 42nd, 21:43.12, respectively. There were 69 who finished the 5,000 meter course.
Gregoire is not new to the front position as he is the defending State B individual champion for the past two years. Along with the individual championships, he has also been a part of the two-year Wakonda state championship Class B teams as well.
After losing most of that team to graduation last year, the first year of the combined Irene-Wakonda team may be a rebuilding one.
Coach Tony Skonhovd will try and rub off some magic on his new runners as he is challenged to compete in this higher division. Coach Skonhovd was just recently named Cross Country Coach of the Year, across all classes, at the South Dakota High School Coaches Clinic held in Aberdeen this past August.
