The Eagles were able to figure out the Bulldog attack and hold it in check for the rest of the half. However, it wasn't until the end of the second quarter that I/W could put together much of a sustained drive. Finally, using a mixture of passes and runs, the Eagles moved the ball deep into Bulldogs territory.
Sophomore quarterback, Josh Nielson, broke loose and ran to the Bulldog five-yard line. The Baltic defense stiffened, but on fourth down, junior Adam Polley bulled his way over the goal line for the Eagles' first points. Polley added the conversion to knot the score at 8 all for a half-time score.
The Eagles began to dominate the Bulldog offense in the second half, but offensively could not score in the third quarter. The Eagles did put together several good series to move the football and keep good field position, though.
I/W was able to take the lead early in the fourth period on Polley's second TD. The conversion try failed leaving the Bulldogs in good position. Baltic put the fear into Eagle fans when they connected on a long pass and put together several good runs to move inside the 10-yard line. A strong defensive stand and a holding penalty kept the Bulldogs out of the end zone. From there the Eagle offense took over chewing up chunks of yardage behind the line of Eric Hansen, Andy Peterson, and Jared Viergutz.
With about half of the last stanza completed, Polley took a pitch and scampered 65 yards for his third TD. He wasn't done for the night, however. On Baltic's ensuing possession they tried a screen pass. Polley read it perfectly, stepped in front of the pass and raced 15 yards for his fourth touchdown. Senior, Shaun Hessman, capped the scoring with the successful conversion run.
Defensively, Polley led the way with nine tackles and the interception. Also turning in strong defensive efforts were the line of Viergutz, Derrick Pearson, and Josh Wuestewald. Linebacker Eric Anderson added eight tackles to the effort. Hessman also had an interception for the Eagles.
Offensively, Polley gained 134 yards rushing. Anderson caught four passes from Nielson. The Eagles have a bye this Friday. Their next game will be in Irene against the Tea Area Titans on Sept. 23 for homecoming.
