Dr. Szabo earned her doctorate with a specialization in Native American Art from the University of New Mexico and served on the faculty of Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA, before becoming the Curator of American Art at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk. Szabo joined the faculty of the University of New Mexico Department of Art and Art History in 1988.�
Dr. Szabo has published widely on Native American art, especially on 19th-century plains drawings. Her book, Howling Wolf and the History of Ledger Art, was published in 1994.
and an anthology she edited, entitled Painters, Patrons, and Identity, appeared in 2001.
