Michels takes command of SDNG battalion
While on active duty he served in Desert Storm in the 1st Infantry Division in Kuwait. He returned to the South Dakota National Guard in 1993.

The 1st Battalion, 147 Field Artillery is headquartered in Sioux Falls and its soldiers are primarily from southeastern South Dakota. LTC Michels takes command of soldiers that have an important role in supporting military operations in Iraq. Seventy soldiers from the 1st Battalion recently returned from a 12-month mission in Iraq. The 152 soldiers of the 1st Battalion's "Charlie" Battery, headquartered in Yankton, are headed to Iraq later this year.

LTC Michels is the legislative liaison and executive director for the Employer Support Committee for South Dakota Joint Forces in Rapid City. In this position he is a voice for the South Dakota National Guard soldiers and airman within the state and federal government and works with employers to support employees participation in the South Dakota National Guard.

LTC Michels is the son of Patricia Michels, Vermillion. He and his wife Lynette live in Rapid City. They have two children, Austin (AJ) and Allie.
