Ellsworth Brooks

Ellsworth Allen Brooks lost his lengthy battle with cancer in his lungs on Sept. 11, 2005 (age of 90 years and 19 days young) at his residence in Downey, CA. He was under the care of Asera Hospice. He slipped away early in the early morning hours surrounded by the love of his children and family.

Ellsworth Allen Brooks was born on Aug. 22, 1915 at home in the rural area of Vermillion to Guy Allen and Edna Autentia (West) Brooks where he joined his sister Frances. He was a grandson of one of the original non-native American explorers of the Wind Caves in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Ellsworth went to school at Independence #1 (as did his father and his oldest two daughters); he attended University High School in Vermillion and worked on the farm helping his parents when his younger 2 brothers Lowell and Ralph joined the military during World War II.

Ellsworth married Isabell Rodman on May 8, 1937. They settled down on one of his parent's farms. In August of 1952, the young Brooks family packed all of their worldly possessions and their four children in a 1948 Chevrolet and headed to Bellflower, CA. Ellsworth was hired by Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in the East Los Angeles area in September of 1952; the family settled down in Lakewood, CA. During 1968, Ellsworth and Isabell parted company; each going their separate way.

Ellsworth and Bonnie Algene (Erickson) Brooks were married on Aug. 1, 1976 in the patio of Bonnie's Downey home. Ellsworth retired from Firestone Tire & Rubber in 1979. Firestone Tire & Rubber closed this location the following year, leaving his family to understand that they just couldn't make it without him.

Ellsworth enjoyed woodworking making TV trays, flower pots, plant stands, trivets and toys for the younger grandchildren; doing the daily crossword puzzles. They enjoyed bowling, going to summer concerts in the local parks, putting jigsaw puzzles together, traveling and being active with the Firestone Retiree's group. They truly enjoyed spending time with their families and grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his premature twins, Carol and Carl; sister-in-law, Berniece; youngest brother, Ralph; Bonnie's youngest son, Mark; son-in-law, Elmer Pruitt; premature great-granddaughter, Rachel Rutherford; former spouse, Isabell Brooks and his wife, Bonnie Brooks.

Those who remain, having shared his life, love and happiness: sister Frances (Glenn) Knachmuhs, Sun City, FL; brother Lowell (Betty) Brooks, Spokane WA; and his children; Connie Pruitt, Vermillion; Lois (Chester) Loggins, Santa Barbara, CA; Earl (Elaine) Brooks, Albuquerque, NM; Joan (Eddie) Clergy, Mead, WA; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends across the country, as well as Bonnie's two children Kayellen (Frank) Naumann, Anaheim, CA and Mark (Sharon) Brooks, Downey, CA, her four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Viewing was Sept. 15 from 2 to 7 p.m. His services were held Friday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. in the Luyben Family Spongberg Bellflower Norwalk Mortuary Chapel, Bellflower, CA.

Ellsworth was laid to rest next to Bonnie immediately following the services at the Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, CA.
