Skonhovd named top S.D. cross country coach

Skonhovd named top S.D. cross country coach What can you give a man who led Wakonda cross country to two state championships back to back? How about 2005 South Dakota High School Coaches Association Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year!

Long-time resident Tony Skonhovd was awarded this first-time award during the S.D. High School Coaches Clinic in Aberdeen in late August.

Tony Skonhovd has worked the past five years bettering runners not only in cross country but also in track. One such runner is Robert Gregoire. Gregoire, during his sophomore and junior years, brought home the individual state title.

In the past five years coach Skonhovd has racked up many titles in South Dakota. Along with two state titles, he and his runners have compiled numerous cross country meets and regional wins.

Other coaches nominated for SDHSCA Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year hail from such schools as Yankton, Rapid City Stevens, Eureka, Lennox and Great Plains Lutheran.

This year will be the first year for Eagles Cross Country co-oping with Irene. Wish all the Eagle runners good luck at the meets this year as I-W sports are now Class A. As the change goes from green to blue, we can all say thanks to Tony for all his hard work in bringing excellence to Wakonda once again.
