Tanager girls softball team opens with a DH win By Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanager softball club team won a double header on Aug. 28 facing Brookings and West Central at the Shrerman Park complex in Sioux Falls. Coach Matt Brandhagen has a talented squad of 11 high school softballers to introduce the SDHSAA club team season.

Game #1 was a high scoring contest with the Tanagers out pointing Brookings 23-0. Brianna Brinkman was the winning pitcher giving up one hit in two innings. Chelsea Houska pitched one inning and gave up one hit. Their teammates put on an overpowering display of offense.

Four players scored three runs each and four plated two runs each.

Brinkman reached first base on 3 hits and scored 3 runs; Donica Crichton went 1 for 2 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs; Krista Froke � 2 for 2, 3 R, 2 RBIs; Brittany Campbell � 1 for 1, 2 walks, 3 runs, 3 RBIs; Houska � 2 for 2, 2 runs; Kayla Munger � 2 for 3, 2 runs; Katie Kashas � 2 for 3, 2 runs; Mary Ann Bierle � 3 walks, 2 runs. The team had 20 hits and 10 walks. Jenny Bye, Britt Bye, and Alicia Brown each scored once.

Game two was a much more of a competitive nature as Jenny Bye pitched a steady seven-hit, six-run, seven innings. Thankfully, the Tanagers scored seven runs on 11 hits to claim the victory.

Vermillion scoring stats were: Kashas � 3 for 3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs; Houska � 1 for 3, 1 run; Froke � 1 for 3, 1 run; Crichton 2 for 2, 3 RBIs; Munger � 2 for 3, 2 RBIs; Campbell � 1 for 3, 1 run; Britt Bye � 1 for 3, 1 run; Brown � on base once, 1 run.
