USD soccer stays unbeaten with 2-0 win The South Dakota women's soccer team (5-0) continued its best start in school history, by recording a 2-0 victory over the Upper Iowa Peacocks (2-2) in Fayette, IA, Sept. 4.
USD got on top early in the first half, by scoring at the 5:04 mark in the period that saw the two teams combine for 30 shots.
Sophomore Ashley Ervin (Western Springs, IL), who finished with a match-high eight shots, scored unassisted to give the Coyotes the early lead and the eventual game winner.
With 18 minutes left in the match, junior Carla Neppl (Omaha, NE), who scored her first goal of the season in the win over 10th-ranked Truman State yesterday, put the ball past Upper Iowa's Sarah Hiatt at the 72:03 mark, unassisted, to put the match out of reach.
As a team, USD outshot the Peacocks, 34-14, in the first meeting between the two schools. The Coyotes placed 15 of their shots on goal.
Sophomore Keyton Wheelock (Traverse City, MI) played all 90 minutes in goal for USD and pitched her third shutout of the season by making five saves.
For UIU, Hiatt made 13 saves, while allowing both goals.
South Dakota will rest until Saturday, Sept. 10, when they travel to Joplin, MO, to take on Washburn, before playing Missouri Southern State on Sept. 11. Both matches against the MIAA foes are slated for a 1 p.m. start in Joplin.
