Was this a mean joke? "No, just a mistake made in scoring the meet," said Skonhovd. However, Eagle Rob Gregoire's individual win could not be stripped from him. He will add it to his two first place TVC trophies he already owns.
Hurley ran well but did not run enough members to make a full team; however, their points did not count in the team competition. As a result of this mistake, Baltic tied in points with Irene/Wakonda, 14 a piece.
The tie breaker goes to each team's fourth runner. Baltic's placed higher than I/W Eagle's and won the team trophy. Coach Skonhovd said of the mix-up, "We didn't want to win the wrong way. This second place trophy still means a bunch to us as a few weeks ago we didn't even have a full team."
Individually, Gregoire won his third straight TVC title with the time, 17:35.7. Matt Davis placed seventh overall with a time of 19:10.8. The Eagles' third runner, Joey Wuestewald placed 11th with his time, 19:45.0. Eighth grader Wuestewald just recently joined the Eagle team, helping to make a full team allowing Irene/Wakonda to compete in the team category.
"He has tremendous potential as a runner. He's so young and already and has great times," said Skonhovd. Rounding off the team was Chris Nelson, placing 16th with his 20:33.7 5,000 meter race.
Gayville-Volin won the girls' competition with 2004 state winner Emma Erickson winning first place with 16:56.9. Sophomore Katie Sokolowski placed third for the Eagles with a time of 17:40.7. Katie is the lone runner for Irene/Wakonda.
In regionals Friday, Oct. 14 at Lennox, Irene/Wakonda runner, Robert Gregoire received his third region title in the past three years. He was the region "3B" champion the last two years. Gregoire ran a 16:32, beating the number two runner by 46 seconds.
Matt Davis placed 24th; his time was 19:24. With a time of 19:31, Joey Wuestewald placed 26th. Another personal best for this course! Chris Nelsen placed 41st to help the Eagles take home a fifth place at regions. His time was also a personal best on the Lennox course, 20:31. Lennox won region "3A." The Irene/Wakonda Eagles boys' varsity ended the year with a record of 36-21.
Katie Sokolowski ran away with a sixth place finish. Her best time was 16:07; it was also a personal best for her. She improved her time on the Lennox course by 22 seconds. Beresford won the girls' side with 19 points.
Come cheer on Soko-lowski and Gregiore as they will represent I-W at the State Cross Country meet in Rapid City next Saturday, Oct. 22. Class "A" Girls run at 12:30 p.m., while the boys run at 1:30 p.m.
