The Eagles quickly took control of the game. After fielding the opening kickoff, the Eagles marched down the field into Viborg territory. Sophomore Josh Nielson took the ball in from eight yards out for the initial score of the game. The drive took three minutes to accomplish.
Irene/Wakonda's second score took place five minutes later when senior wingback Shaun Hessman slipped in from three yards out on a draw play. Running mate Mitch Hessman scored the conversion to give the Eagles a 14-0 lead.
Both teams exchanged punts after not being able to score to start off the second quarter. Midway through the period, fullback Adam Polley powered over from two yards out to extend the Eagles' cushion to 20-0. However, on the ensuing kickoff, John Anderson took the ball 70 yards for the Vikings' first touchdown. The Eagles responded with a scoring answer after Shaun Hessman picked up a Viking fumble. Robert Hauger turned the corner for a three-yard TD run to raise the score to 26-8.
The Vikings came back quickly, using mostly passes. With just over a minute left in the half, quarterback Brett Jensen found B.J. Zimmerman in the corner of the endzone to bring them back into the game.
Halftime festivities for Parents' Night began with the Eagles up 26-14.
The Eagles tacked on two more TDs in the third period. Josh Nielson found Eric Anderson in the endzone for a 20-yard scoring strike. Polley added the second touchdown on a 60-yard breakaway. Arron Ness ended the scoring with a successful point-after-try to make the score 39-14.
Polley was the leading rusher with 151 yards on 14 attempts. Nielson gained 92 yards on eight carries. He was also 8 for 11 passing for 98 yards and one TD. Anderson caught four passes for 77 yards.
Defensively, Anderson had eight tackles; Polley was credited with 7 1/2 tackles, and Shaun Hessman had seven tackles and a fumble recovery.
The Eagles, 5-2 on the year, will host Chester in Wakonda this Thursday night at 7 p.m.
