JV football team ends season with loss vs. Yankton
In a crisply played football game, the Tanager JV team suffered through a rash of "fumble-itis" against Yankton's sophomores at the VHS practice field on Monday, Oct. 10.

Falling behind 10-6 at halftime, the Tanagers had given up a touchdown and field goal, courtesy of two fumble recoveries. Another fumble (on the one yard line) cost the home team an early scoring opportunity, also.

Needless to say, the Yankton sophs put up a ferocious defense and capitalized on the results. The Tanager JVs also performed an admirable job on defense, holding the young Bucks to six first downs.

The short field situations left the Tanagers a tough response to overcome the early lead and, while they made a determined effort, they couldn't match Yankton's 13 second half points, and lost 23-12.

Leading runner for Vermillion was Jerrod Freidel who gained yards on 14 carries. He scored both touchdowns on 3-yard plunges. Reid Meierkort completed 3 passes, 1 each to Bobby Dykstra (30 yards), Paul Hammond (12 yards), and Jerrod Freidel (0 yards).

A stiff defense showed some sterling efforts by: Zach Weiss 9 Ts; Ryan Husby 7 Ts; Harrison Hawley 6 Ts; Eric McPherson and Jerrod Freidel 5 Ts each; Tom Mollet recovered a fumble along with 4 tackles; Nick Rasmussen and Nick Schaffer each recorded 4 Ts. All together, the team registered 61 tackles by 17 different defensemen.
